Yoga for Healthy Lower Backs (YHLB)

YHLB is gentle, non-strenuous and suitable for Beginners.  It is specialised yoga taught in small groups and is just about THE most effective research-proven treatment offering long-term, self-help, feel-good benefits.

Compared with other rigorously-tested treatment options YHLB gave more benefit than:

  • manipulation by osteopaths/chiropractors/physiotherapists;

  • exercise classes taught by physiotherapists;

  • manipulation and then exercise classes taught by physiotherapists;

  • massage;

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy;

  • a self-help booklet;

  • a back-care book;

  • normal GP care;

  • and 6 individual sessions of Alexander Technique .

Research has shown that yoga is an enjoyable form of home DIY therapy.

Arthritis Research UK (now Versus Arthritis) funded the research and support the use of YHLB.  They are pushing YHLB more with NHS and Public Health. Find out more about the research by clicking the button below.

 For YHLB to be of maximum benefit it is recommended that people practise for approx. 30 minutes daily (or at least every other day) to begin with and then twice a week to maintain health.  Those who did not practise as much still gain benefit from the classes and postural work, breathing and relaxation.

60% of the trial participants were practising at home 9 months after their 12-week YHLB course had finished and were still gaining benefit.  4 years after completing the course, 100% of trial participants phoned randomly for media purposes were still benefitting from the yoga.

YHLB was designed for Beginners, but can be of benefit to anyone. Existing yoga students can also benefit from attending YHLB.

I trained in 2021 to become a Yoga for Healthy Lower Backs teacher. This is a specialised, evidence based course. Numbers are limited to allow for individual attention. To register your interest for future courses please get in touch via the button below.
